Sometime recently, Slackware got upgraded to version 13.37. And Firefox got upgraded to version 4. And Flash got upgraded to some new version too. In between all these changes, a problem started when viewing YouTube videos. Most videos will stop at the 30 second mark, and that's the end of it. I can't view any more. Anne has the same problem on her Mac but she is still using Firefox 3. On the other hand, I have the same Firefox 4/Flash system at work and it does not have the problem. But the work system and the home system had different problems with the upgrade to Flash. The same problem happens with Konqueror and playing Flash. Does Konqueror use the same Flash library that Firefox uses? It's /usr/lib/mozilla/libflashplayer.so.
I do not know if any one of these specific upgrades caused the problem. I don't know if it's even software at all. Everyone likes to blame Flash for problems, but it doesn't cause all problems.
It might be a network issue at home. I am inclined to think it is not, but as Anne and I are using different versions of Firefox and the problem started roughly at the same time for both of us, it could very well be a network issue. I have rebooted all network components. It has made no difference. Maybe I need a new cable modem, one of the new DOCSIS 3 ones? Maybe it's time to upgrade my router? Maybe the cable network is causing problems? I don't know where to start testing something like this. Downloads work fine. Usenet works fine. Online games work fine. I can keep a connection open between work and home for weeks on end without any problems.
Anything that uses Flash and needs a long connection back home has the problem. YouTube is one obvious victim. Speed tests with speakeasy.net is another. The speed tests occasionally just freeze up.
I have reverted back to Firefox 3 and it has made no difference. I have not reverted to an earlier version of Flash. I am unsure how to obtain earlier versions, but this is the next step I plan on taking.
There has been one benefit. I rarely view YouTube videos these days. But Anne is very irritated by this problem.
