CUPS PPD proves very slow

I used to use the "HPLJ1300 + Gutenprint" PPD with CUPS and my HP Laserjet 1300. The new Cups that just came out did not work well with the latest version of that PPD, so I switched to what they recommended "HP LaserJet 1300 Series Postscript (recommended)" and I did that knowing full well that the HPLJ1300 did not have Postscript. But it worked okay with test prints and it produced good output. What I didn't count on was speed. It's taking 3 to 4 minutes to prepare each page for printing. A four page printout now takes about 15 minutes to produce.

I tried all the available options and finally found one that works nicely and is fast. It's not the recommended one, but I won't hold that against it. It's "HP LaserJet 1300 hpijs pcl3". This works and it is fast. Most of the others printed the test page over four pages, putting a quarter on each page. The HPLJ1300 has PCL3 as it's basic language, so I am not surprised.
