Recently, the New York Times changed their website viewing policies and introduced a paywall. They want you to subscribe. They also have a nice iPhone app to let you view their website. I use an iPod Touch and have been happy with the New York Times app. But I wondered how things would change after the paywall was introduced.
The app upgraded this morning and now I know. It looks the same, but I can't really tell anything about its behaviour because it is so slow. It has become so slow it's unusable. I don't know what it's doing. It must be trying to do a lot of stuff in the background, so much that everything else slows to a crawl. There was a small bar at the bottom with Learn More about the changes, and I clicked on it, and gave up after a while. It's so slow as to be worthless now. I'll wait a week and see if they fix it, but if not, it's no big deal.
I've been getting all my news lately from Al Jazeera English. The Al Jazeera iPod app is slick and fast. Their news is very interesting. Better than the rest of the US news for happenings outside the US. When I first viewed them a few years ago, they were a curiosity. Now they are essential.
